A few Windows XP Problems Answered

For those of you who are sick to death of the intrusions of Windows Messenger - here's how to uninstall it completely from your computer.

Or maybe you have encountered the little problem of your Windows XP hanging at Shut Down / Log Off.

Or maybe that other little Windows XP nuisance, Desktop Cleanup has been annoying you and doing away with all your handy little desktop icons.

Here are the answers to these problems.

Uninstall Windows Messenger from Windows XP
  1. Using Notepad, open the file %windir%\inf\sysoc.inf
  2. Change the line that reads
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
    to
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
    (delete the word "hide" but leave the commas)
  3. Go to the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs, and select the "Windows Components" tag.
  4. "Windows Messenger" now appears at the bottom of the list. Remove it as you would any other application.
There is another method which will also uninstall Windows Messenger:

Go to Start > Run, then type in this and run it. (one Line)
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Windows XP hangs on Shutdown/Log Off

There are several known problems that cause this, such as Roxio's Easy CD Creator and Direct CD (best to uninstall them and use Nero Burning Rom Instead) also Intel Ambient HaM Modems can cause XP not to shut down properly (Get the latest drivers from Intel.com).

Try downloading the 'Restarting XP' update from Microsoft.
Use this update to fix any restart problems you have, and XP should shut down properly.

Desktop Cleanup

XP users may have noticed from time to time, that XP will prompt you to clean up your desktop. This is not useful at all for some people.

The files it cleans off should be found somewhere under C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME.
  • You can turn Desktop Cleanup off by right clicking on the desktop and
  • selecting properties..
  • then selecting the desktop tab..
  • then Customize Desktop and
  • uncheck the box under desktop cleanup.
