Quickbooks & Quicken Tips

Quicken and Quickbooks software are very popular today for home and small business bookkeeping. Here are a few links to tips that will enhance your use of these programs whatever version you are using.

Quickbooks & Windows XP

Below are a couple of questions that have been raised concerning Quickbooks and the latest version of Windows Operating System - XP.

Question: Can I use QuickBooks 2001 on Windows XP?

Answer: Yes, this version of QuickBooks can be installed on a computer running Microsoft® Windows® XP. Perform a normal installation from the QuickBooks installation CD.

Prior to QuickBooks 2001 Release R3, the QuickBooks installer does not recognize if Microsoft Internet Explorer® (IE) 6.0 is installed on a computer running Windows XP. If your QuickBooks CD is Release R1 or release R2, the QuickBooks installer will require you to choose to install Internet Explorer 5.5.

Prior to the completion of the install, you will receive the following two messages:

Installation of Internet Explorer 5.5 not completed successfully, followed by To run many of QuickBooks (Pro) 2001 features, Internet Explorer 5.5 is required. You must install it before running QuickBooks (Pro) 2001.

Click OK to each of these messages and allow QuickBooks to finish installing. Once QuickBooks finishes installing, restart your computer.

Note: If you do not have Microsoft® virtual machine for Java installed on the computer where you are installing QuickBooks, you will need to install it for QuickBooks to function properly on Windows XP. Microsoft virtual machine for Java is available as a download.

To see if you have Microsoft virtual machine for Java already on your computer, search your computer for the file msjava.dll. It should be located in either the Windows\System32 or the Winnt\System32 directory.

Question: How do I find QuickBooks in the Windows XP Start Menu?

Answer: If you are using the Windows XP default Start menu, only the most frequently used files and applications are displayed for quick and easy access. To open other programs, click the Windows Start button, select All Programs, and then click the desired program shortcut.

You can also add QuickBooks or other programs to the Windows XP initial Start menu display. Programs that are added to the Start menu will appear at the top of the program list. Use the following steps:
  1. Click the Start button, then choose All Programs.
  2. Locate the shortcut you would like to add, and click it with the right mouse button.
  3. With the left mouse button, select Pin to Start menu.
Note: A shortcut does not need to be located from within the Start menu. If you have a shortcut on the desktop, right-click the shortcut, and select Pin to Start menu.
If you would like to remove a shortcut from the Start menu, use these steps:
  1. Click the Start button, and locate the shortcut you want to remove.
  2. Right-click the shortcut, and with the left mouse button, select Unpin to Start menu.
