Build a Digital Jukebox with Windows Media Player 10

(From www.microsoft.com)

Never again will you have to hunt through stacks of CDs or risk scratching your disks, because Windows Media Player 10 can organize and deliver instant access to your music. With your digital jukebox you can always find the mix you're in the mood to hear.

First upgrade your Windows Media player to version 10.

There are three easy steps to building a digital jukebox:
  • Copying music from CD to your computer
  • Organizing your music
  • Creating playlists
Rip music tracks from a CD to your computer

You can easily rip (copy) an entire collection of CDs to your hard disk using the Copy from CD feature in Windows Media Player.
Rip Music from a CD to your Computer

To Rip music from a CD to your Computer.
  1. Start Windows Media Player and connect to the Internet.
  2. By connecting to the Internet, media information about the songs being ripped will be displayed in the Library feature.
  3. Insert an audio CD into the CD drive, and then click Rip.
  4. All songs are selected to be ripped if you have not previously ripped them.
  5. If there are any songs that you do not want to rip, clear the check box next to each. You can use the check box at the top of the list to select or clear all check boxes.
  6. Click Rip Music.
  7. The first time you rip music, you are prompted to choose the format for the files being created. Click one of the following options:
    • Keep my current format settings. This option keeps your current file format and audio quality level settings and immediately starts ripping the songs you selected to your computer. By default, the Player uses the Windows Media Audio format, which optimizes the balance between file size and sound quality.
    • Change my current format settings. Select this option if you want to change the format, bit rate, storage folder, or other options.
    • After you click an option, click OK. (To change the format or audio quality settings later, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Rip Music tab.)
  8. After the songs have been ripped, you can go to the library to play them.

Organize your music in a way that works for you
When you copy your music, the player includes and even supplements the information from the original album to create a Media Library you can personalize.
The library automatically organizes music into categories such as album artist and genre.

Adding Content to the Library
You have a number of options for adding content to your library. When you rip (copy) music from your audio CDs to your computer or download files from online stores, the files are automatically added to your library. The purpose of this section is to explain how to add digital media files that are already on your computer to your library.
  1. In Windows Media Player, click Library.
  2. Click Add to Library and then click By Searching Computer. The Add to Library by Searching Computer dialog box is displayed.
  3. In the Search on list, click the drive you want to search.
  4. To search one folder on the drive rather than the entire drive, in Look in, click Browse to enter the folder.
  5. Select your preferences for updating media information.
  6. Click Search. Depending on the size of your digital media collection and the speed of your computer's processor, the search may take some time.
3. Create playlists
Remember having fun putting together the perfect mixed tape for friends? Now you can make that same personalized gift in less than half the time. With the player, it's easy to create a group of songs sorted into the order you want to hear them.

Drag items from the Contents or Details pane in your library to the List pane to add them to the new playlist.

  2. Drag items from the Contents or Details pane in your library to the List pane to add them to the new playlist.
  3. To play the list, click the Play button.
  4. To save the list, click Now Playing List, and then click Save Playlist As.
  5. In the File Name box, type the playlist name. Once you save the playlist, it's added to the My Playlists category in the library.
Once you have a playlist of digital music, Windows Media Player makes it easy to enjoy that music everywhere you go. Burn your own CDs and take your music with you.
