When I connect to the internet my hompage comes up as res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdochop.dll/defaultASX.htm#privacy_API; - when I change my home page it goes staight back to this, how can I fix this?

It sounds like you have been hijacked by some piece of malicious spyware or a trojan virus. I would do a search on google using the address you are getting as the search item and see what you are up against. Some of these are difficult to get rid of. Good Luck.

If that doesn't work then your printheads are no good and will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, as the cost of replacing the printheads is worth more than buying a brand new Canon iP1000 printer that will be as good as, if not better than, your old outdated Canon 200spx, I would recommend throwing the printer away. The Canon iP1000, for $89, will come with new printheads and new cartridges and a warranty.

Be careful with your ebay purchases in future. Buy only from reputable dealers.

I brought a Canon s200spx printer from ebay and it only prints in the colour blue. How do I get it to print black or other colours

Go into your printer maintenance and do a printhead clean on both colour and black. You might need to do this a few times and be warned, it will use a fair bit of ink.

I have reformated my computer and I had installed Win 98SE and after I had completed my installation the computer is not detecting the existing 32 mb graphics card and my lan card. What should I do?

You should get out the original CDs for your graphics and network cards and reinstall them. If you do not have the discs, you will have to do a search on the manufacturers' websites and see if you can download the drivers.

May 2005
I have a Win2000 Pro upgraded from Win98SE. Now, in the left pane Win.Explorer, nothing happens when I rightclick a folder and select Properties, Sharing... or SendTo > Desctop As Shortcut. Copy, Delete and all the others work well.

This is most likely due to the upgrading from Win98SE to Win2000 Pro. Theoretically upgrading should work, but more often than not it doesn't. The best way to go from one to the other, is to back up all your data, then reformat your hard drive and do a complete new install of Win2000 Pro.

My computer freezes whenever I start excel. It's the same even if I remove and reinstall the excel program. All the other programs are runing well (including word, powerpoint, etc.) can you give me an idea what the problem is.

(problem solved by user accessing EXCEL website) : Excel crashes on opening / closing / prompts "not enough resources".

This could really be anything. Considering that, it's remarkably often a corrupt toolbar file. So worth a try the following:
1. Close Excel (if it managed to open).
2. Reboot if necessary.
3. Locate all files (with Start > Search etc) with extension .xlb
4. Rename the extension(s) to something like .old
5. Start XL again.

I am using Windows 2000 advanced server and attatched with it is "Canon S200SPx" printer with it. Two days back I formated my HDD and reinstalled all necessary s/w. My printer now shows me error "Printer not Found". I have checked all the connections are provided. I have provided the driver CD but nothing has helped.

Have you tried downloading new drivers from the Canon website.

Check your printer port mode in device manager. Check which mode you should be using for your printer, SPP, ECP or EPP.

If all your cords are functioning properly then, something screwy is going on and you should take it to a technician.

Cannot format C drive as it is in use by another process. When I go to run , if this volume is dismounted first and all Opened Handles to this volume would then be invalid.. I cannot force a dismoval on this volume. What is this volume or process being used that prevents the formatting?

You cannot format C drive from C drive. You have to do it from a boot disk.

March 2005 (further to above)
Thank you, but where do I get a boot disk, or how to do it? Again thank you as it is a necessity for me to format my C drive as it does not read the CD's except on Safe Mode. I had a D drive and was able to format that one, but nothing seems to work otherwise for the C drive. Please give me some guidance as I cannot even load my software for my printer.

I don't know where you are, but I would advise you to seek professional help by getting a technician to do your reload if you don't know that much about it. Your boot disk should be with your original software that you got when you bought your computer. Windows ME, 2000 and XP will all boot off the original installation CD. With the earlier versions you have to create your boot disk first and that will depend on the state of your C: drive as to whether you can do it now that you have been tinkering with it. I would strongly advise that you take your PC to a technician.

I have an IBM Aptiva type 2194 with Win 98 and I tried to replace the SDRAM 64Mb stick with 2 x 128 Mb PC133 SDRAM 4 Chip Amicroe par #AM 128SD-133. But when I put them into the 2 slots and turned on the PC, it just beeped ( 1 peep / 3 short beeps and then another beep ). The monitor screen remained blank and nothing else happened. According to the user guide book the maximum SDRAM you can fit to this mother board is 256 Mb ( 2 x 128).

Were you statically grounded when you fitted the ram to the mainboard? You should use a static strap or hang on to the power supply when you do this.

You may need to upgrade the BIOS level. To check this, replace the 64Mb ram and then go to the IBM website and check for the latest BIOS version. On the IBM site, there will be a memory map somewhere, maybe look for the mainboard manual.

Failing all that, return to the place where you bought the RAM and get the techs to install it for you.

I have Windows XP Home OS on my home computer and something strange is happening when I play my normal audio CDs (ie. commercial type). No matter which media player I use (Windows Media Player or Real Player) all tracks are playing too fast and makes the vocals sound like the chipmonks!
Any clues? Changing Media Player setting to either digital or analogue makes no difference. I wonder if SP2 (installed via free Microsoft CD)made a difference? Any ideas?

Windows XP operates a bit differently to other windows. It may be that you need to update the device drivers for your audio card to XP versions. Try this first, by going to the websites for the brand of PC or audio card and looking for the latest drivers.

I cant seem to open anything in any video dvd or mepg avi and have it play. I get this error: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Program C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way please contact the applications support team for more information".

There could be many things going on to cause this error. But to give you somewhere to start. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your Windows Media Player. Update your current media player from Microsoft by visiting their site and downloading version 9 if you are running Win 98 or Win ME or version 10 if you are running Win XP.

I am unable to open any of the folders in my control panel due to an error message saying rundll32.exe. Is there a patch I can download to fix this?

It would seem that something you have loaded to your system has overwritten that particular dll file. If your Windows is later than ME, go to the Microsoft updates and download the service packs for your version of windows and install them.

If you are running 95 or ME try this free dll link. You will have to try out the dll files until you get the right one. If that doesn't work, then I am afraid you will have to reload your Windows operating system.

How can I install Windows XP using DOS?

You can't.

August 2004
How do I install a CD ROM on a 486 computer using Windows 3.1 and Windows 95?

Possibly using CDROM drivers setup in autoexec.bat and config.sys.

August 2004
How can I know the speed of memory in nano-seconds?

See the Intel website for specific memory speeds.

August 2004
Can you remove a 286,386,486,CPU from a motherboard and if so, what will I use?

Yes, using an anti static strap, a screw driver to release the clips of the heat sink if it has one and possibly a cpu removal tool which looks like a small comb with a handle.

August 2004
Is it true that you can talk to a computer with a microphone and the computer types what you are saying? if so which software can I use?

Yes, using "Dragon Naturally Speaking" software.

June 2004
I am using XP Pro and I have just added a new hard drive. It comes up in "Disk Management" as healthy. BUT it does not show in "My Computer" nor when I want to move/copy files to it. It only shows up under "My Computer" when I "Explore". I cannot work out or fix the problem!

Your problem sounds odd. Are you sure you have assigned a disk drive letter to the new HD? If you haven't, try that first. If you have, try changing the letter and see if it comes up the next time around. Check that you haven't assigned an earlier letter to be the 'last' drive letter in your configsys file.
Maybe these articles from MS Knowledge base, could help you.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297694&Product=winxp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307889&Product=winxp
Failing all that, get the PC in front of a tech so that he can work it out for you.

In this instance the questioner got back to us with the final solution:
"I have got Tweak XP and had unwittingly checked the box to only show the lettered drives I had at that time. Therefore any future drives that I installed couldn't be seen in My Computer."

rundll32 keeps coming up on start up

rundll32 starts processes which link the dll file to the application. It is always called by a process which is opening. If you take note of the message, you will see which application is calling it. If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP you can check the eventlog for errors (rightclick on my computer and select manage) Then go to Microsoft's knowledge base and enter the event ID in the search box to research the error.

Canon 6035 giving error E002. Do well to give me possible means of solving it.

There are a few causes for the E002 error. The most common cause is a problem with fixing the print. So the error will be in the Thermistor, or the Heater, or the Thermal switch. It could be as simple as a blown globe.
However this is not a problem you can usually repair yourself. It is a job for a technician. The other possible causes are from the SSR or the DC controller PCB. These are less common.
Call a technician to look at your copier.

I have a Canon Bubble jet printer S200SPx and have had my driver updated, it is now asking for CD to be put in to accept printer, I cannot find my CD is there any way of downloading from internet?

Just go to the Canon web site - www.canon.com.au, look for the drivers and download the correct driver for your printer. It obviously didn't like your updates (maybe there was some corruption happening) and wants it's old driver back. You can download it for free.

The first time I plug a USB Mass Storage Device in, I get the HW wizard. That is okay. If I plug in the same MSD, the HW wizard does not pop up. If I use a different USB MSD from the SAME manufacturer, the HW wizard will pop back up again and ask me to load the drivers. Why is this? and is there any way to get the Device Manager to recognize that it already knows this device from this Manufacturer?
Or am I stuck with this situation and USB device has it's own identity, like a MAC-ID?

You will need to load the drivers for each MSD that you wish to use. Each device has its own unique chipset and driver.

March 2004
I use Windows ME and since I've loaded MSN 9, I get a message "Error" Reporting in the icon tray when I go online. How do I get rid of it?

The first thing to try is windows update which you download from Microsoft.
If that doesn't fix it go to the knowledge base at the Microsoft site and look there for the info by entering the product name and error code (or whatever you are seeing) into the search box.

If that also fails, bring it in and let a technician look at it.

March 2004
Why would a computer ask for the product key without reinstalling or installing windows on that computer?

Without knowing what has been going on with your computer (eg kids playing with it, virus attack, hdd corruption) it is impossible to answer your query. If you take it to a technician, I am sure he/she will be able to fix it, but possibly they will still not be able to answer your question.

Can I install Quicken H & B 2002 on my Windows XP administrator account only and not be accessible from other accounts such as guest account or other user accounts?

Under the file menu in your Quicken, you can set a password. Then if you don't tell the other users the password, they can't access your personal account details.

I have used a Canon S200SPx printer for two months. My computer is running Windows 2000, it ran well with the printer until yesterday. I thought the printer cartridge had run out of ink. I bought a new one and installed it. I tried to print a document and A4 size-paper went through the printer and came out blank with no printing of anything at all. I checked the printer maintenance with the user guide, I have checked with deep- cleaning, Print-head alignment, Nozzle-check, Ink-counter reset. It is still printing blank.

You seem to have tried all the normal solutions, try a few more printhead cleans and a nozzle check. If there is still no more ink, it seems like the printhead has gone. If this is the case, then you will need a new printhead (or a new printer, considering how inexpensive the S200 printers are).

However it seems to me that you have only had the printer for 2 months. If this is so, then it is still under warranty. Take it back to your dealer with your receipt and they will replace the entire unit for you under warranty.

System power supply that is turning slowly, not blowing hard and is making noise. How to solve this problem?

Buy a new PSU, don't mess around with your powersupply trying to fit a new fan.

November 2003
My father's computer is always give this strange message: "application software is performing illegal operation. please shut down your computer".

This sounds like a spyware problem. The best solution is a system reload. Save what you want and then wipe the Hard drive and reload your programs.

My brother's office internet is not working properly. He is using isdn line with 156kbps speed. His system is networked with the server is controlling the computer and modem is attached to the server. how you solved this problem?

This depends on what your LAN setup is. It can't be answered without a lot more information about the network.

November 2003
My office friend is trying to save his document to my computer hard disk, but couldn't. Why?

This could be due to the way the user rights protocol is configured. If your friend does not have sharing rights with your PC, it can't be done. Change the user rights protocol or ask your administrator to do so.

How do I install XP (Pro Upgrade) with out having to register with windows? I bought the software & two licenses and every time I install XP I have to get the certification # all over again. Any Ideas would be welcomed.

Microsoft has put anti piracy procedures into their XP operating systems. You can't get around this. This shouldn't be a problem for normal situations as you would not be normally installing your operating system repeatedly. If you are unable to get it to install the first time, take it to your technician.

Windows XP will not detect my HP printer.

Make sure you have the XP driver for that printer. You can download them from either hp.com or microsoft.

I have recently bought a PIII 733 with 128 mb RAM and pretty much all standard features. I would like to know what video card you recommend for this system that is not TOO fast for the system, but will not hold it back. Also, what other things can I upgrade pretty cheap to get extra performance out of the aging machine?

Your P111 will take a 32Mb AGP video card for ordinary stuff like Word processing and business programs. They are about $60. A 64Mb AGP video card will serve you as a multi-purpose graphics card for about $90 - 100. And for games you would be looking at 128Mb AGP card for about $157.

SDRAM will go with your processor most likely and it is pretty cheap these days. You can find bargains there just about at any store. Your processor will probably handle up to 512Mb of SDRAM.

You will find that a reload of the system will freshen up and speed up all the stuff you want to do and it would be a recommendation if you haven't already loaded all your gear on.

I am trying to install an operating system on a desktop computer that doesn't have one installed. I have used a boot disk to start the system and have formatted it also. The problem is when I type D:SETUP.EXE nothing happens. The cursor just goes to the next line and it just says D: The CD Rom doesn't start and the operating system is not installed. I am trying to install Win98. I have also tried to use another CD-ROM drive and it still didn't work.

First I would suggest to fdisk the hard drive and remove the old partition and recreate it.
Then restart using the boot disk again.
Then format using format c:/s
The type cd d:
Then dir
If the directory comes up with a list of files including setup.exe then
Type setup.exe
If this fails, is it an original copy of windows?
Also is it a boot disk for that operating system eg Win98se and win98se bootdisk?

I have created email stationery and would like to put our logo in the body of the page. I am using Outlook and XP. I would like the logo to be in the center of the page and to slike down as the person scrolls. I want the logo to be embedded in the page as if it were a watermark and when I start typing the text types straight over it.

Go to Outlook and click on tools
Options
Then the mailformat tab
Choose html as the format for sending email, uncheck the use MS Word box if it is checked, and then click on stationery picker
Select new
Enter the name for your stationery eg watermark, select start with blank and click next
Choose the font name and size for your stationery, then select picture for background and click on browse
Find the picture that you want to use, this should be a gif or jpg file, select it and click OK then OK again, this should bring you to the stationery picker dialog box with a preview pane open showing multiple copies of your chosen file picture.
Now right click on the preview window and select view source.
This will open Notepad and you will see the coding for the stationery you have created.
Look for the part in the code that says style=". . . . background-color:#ffffff;"
Add in here the following:
background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed;
Put it just before the background-color:#ffffff;"
Now save the changes File Save
Close Notepad
Click OK and OK again.
Now open up a new email and your stationery should be there.

I am doing a beginner IT course from home and we have to install a Canon S200SPx Bubblejet can you please explain what happens after the PC recognises new Hardware and how to install the software? I am using Win XP Pro.

After your PC has recognised the new hardware, put your Canon Printer CD in the CDROM.

Win XP Pro will Autosearch for the driver files (*.inf).

Carefully follow the prompts from this point, making sure you answer each of the questions. Should be easy to follow.

Is it possible to extract files or folders off of an old C: drive onto a new C: drive?

Plug the old C:drive into the same motherboard as the new C: drive. Make sure the old drive is set as the slave so that the PC will boot on the new drive.

Start machine

Open My Computer and copy and paste the files you want from the old drive which will be called D: or E: or whatever according to what drive letters are free on your system (not being used by the CD Rom and Burner, etc) If you are not familiar with the inside of your PC, don't attempt it.

Copy your files and folders to disk from the old PC and then insert in the new PC and paste.

How do I network 3 computers together?

Presuming that each computer is running RJ45 network cards, all you need to do is buy a hub, connect each computer to it with patch cable, configure whatever networking software you are using and it should all go.

When trying to delete temporary internet files on xp the folder freezes and won't delete. Any suggestions?

There are two ways to delete temp internet files:
1. Open control panel from start menu
select internet options
under the general tab go to temporary internet files
select delete files button and click,
select delete all offline content as well to be sure
You can also delete the cookies from here too.

2. Open windows explorer
then go to windows
temp
temporary internet files
open all the folders and select only the contents of the folders, not the folders themselves and delete.

I have a problem with my outook2000, my pop3 setting changes to localhost doesn't work even if I change it to actual settings

There are a number of different things that could cause a problem with heaps of scope in itself like this.
Possibly this is a problem with your mail settings.
Without actually looking at the situation, it is impossible to sort it out. Where are you? If you are within the Esperance region, one of our techs can visit to look at it for you.

How to install a mouse?

For a standard mouse with a cord and serial or PS2 or USB connection. First turn off the computer. Then plug in the mouse. Then turn the computer back on. Don't try to plug it in with the computer running, you can damage the connection. If the mouse has software with it, install the software after turning the computer back on.

How to fix a scratched CD?

If the scratch is just a surface scratch, CD cleaner will sometimes give the surface enough tension to be readable.

If the scratch is deep, CD repair kits are available. Contact our sales staff for more information.
